Dream Restoration

A stunning 1961 MGA Mark I, lovingly restored by Northland high school students, is set to go under the hammer, with all proceeds helping fund education and trades training for local youth.
The rare British classic was donated to I Have a Dream Charitable Trust by long-time volunteer, mentor, and MG enthusiast Dave Cotty. Rather than selling it for personal gain, he wanted to use it to help change lives.
Students from the Automotive Trades Academy at one of I Have a Dream’s partner schools, Tikipunga High School, have spent the past three years restoring the vehicle under the expert guidance of tutor Clint McEwen.
“When the MG arrived, it wasn’t running, which meant it became a full learning opportunity,” says Clint. “The students stripped it down and rebuilt it from the ground up, learning everything from welding and bodywork to engine mechanics.”
For many students like Tearii, the project offered more than technical skills, it offered direction, pride, and a pathway into the trades.
“It’s been a long process,” says Tearii. “But now that it’s finished, I’m excited to see how the auction goes. This opens doors for us.”
The charity auction will take place on 30 September 2025 at the MG Car Club NZ’s Annual Meeting with auctioneering support provided by Webb’s Auctions Collectors’ Cars, Motorcycles & Automobilia department. Funds raised will be split evenly between I Have a Dream and Tikipunga High School.
